Counseling
Mission
The mission of the Richmond Public Schools counseling program is to provide a comprehensive, developmental counseling program addressing the academic, career and personal/social development of all students. School counselors are professional advocates who provide support to maximize student potential and academic achievement. In partnership with other educators, parents, or guardians and the community, school counselors facilitate the support system to ensure all students in the Richmond City school district have access to and are prepared with the knowledge and skills to contribute at the highest level as productive members of society.
Vision
In Richmond Public Schools, school counselors have implemented a comprehensive developmental counseling model. Student goals are based on the National Standards for School Counseling Programs as outlined by the American School Counseling Association. School Counselors assist all students in developing and applying skills needed to enhance academic, career and personal/social development. The results for students are higher levels of cognitive, ethical, and interpersonal maturity.
Richmond Public Schools counselors are committed to ethical practices as advocated by the Virginia Counselor Association, and to participation in professional development activities essential to maintaining a quality school counseling program.
The School Counseling Program has three broad developmental areas that include standards and competencies, and promotes behaviors that enhance learning for all students:
- Academic
- Career
- Personal/Social
